We must know how to properly discern the voices that continually speak to us from within our own hearts and heads and from the natural earthly environment in which we live.

 

How can we realize when it is the voice of the GOOD SHEPHERD who gives LIFE to his sheep? How can tell in the midst of trouble or unpleasant circumstances whether we are listening to 1) our own soulish voice 2) the voice of God 3) the voice of darkness.

We must first address what the Bible tells us;

“Discernment comes by reason of use.”

That means that the more we pray and heed the voice of the inward witness “the Good Shepherd”, the easier it will become to distinguish God’s Voice.

My grandmother and parents (who were Baptists, Presbyterians, not yet knowing Pentecost!) always got direction from the inward prompting of God’s Holy Spirit. I remember when I made Jesus Lord at age 16, I was curious how they determined what the Lord’s Spirit was telling them to do.

 

I read the Bible, but found it very hard to “hear the voice of the Good Shepherd” in my own spirit. My parents prayed and God answered. I prayed and God answered me, too.

 

But my Grandmother was known believed in God’s ability to direct her in every situation, no matter how mundane. She was very intelligent, very wise yet had a childlike faith and trust in the Lord. My grandmother prayed for parking spaces to open up. And they did!

 

When I went to a Southern Baptist college, my mother sent me a tape series about Hearing the Inward Witness of the Lord. I used to try to be in the Lord’s perfect will, so I prayed about everything where I went. It was so much fun.

 

I used to ask God for signs since my discerner was not used to hearing God’s voice. I would ask God to tell me “yes” for example, if the next person that came along (or if I were on the road : the next car) was wearing blue or some such color. If they were not, or the next car came along and was not the color I had stated, I took that as God’s know.

 

I did this method of asking God for a sign for several years. I hardly ever do that now. God honored my childlike faith and even led me by His Spirit when it was time to meet the KEY God sent people, whom I could count name after name after name.

He has led me just like this since age 18. And HE will lead YOU the same way IF you give Him a committed try!

The Holy Spirit knows which way to lead you. He is able to “lead you with his eye upon you.” However, learning to discern His leading takes lots of practice.
